How to be Important on the Web

I wrote this a few years back: my take on building an Internet presence. Though a bit long (3,400 words) and hardly comprehensive, some points might be useful. Also, because I work freelance, it’s a convenient way for people to check my writing. Here, it’s a look at one aspect of Web Marketing. (Editorial Design plays a role with this article too, but you’ll find a better range of design items among my work samples.)

Inside View

To a lesser extent – and for the few who like to browse source code – the article is an example of lightweight graphics, HTML and CSS. Allowing for adaptations made to fit this site, it should be clear I want to avoid the cluttered code of many web-creation programs. Their pages can look fine at first glance. Unfortunately, they are built inside a kind of black box that makes revisions extremely difficult.

A realistic media project, whether traditional or web-oriented, must grow – at the very least from “first draft” equivalent to second draft. One that starts with an uneditable prototype – by far the most common mistake I see – runs into costly and ever-increasing delays.
